Welcome to our R&D shop! The Research and Development of new plans, patent modules, and blueprints is a never ending process. Currently we are working on several products and look forward to releasing them soon.
Releasing a brand new product is a multi step process, and not just a matter of throwing some text on paper and whipping up a few photos. It's much more involved then that, especially if the end result is to be satisfactory. Just to give you an idea of our process for development, we've made a little list:

How we Decide on the Plan, Patent, or Blueprint

This step would seem so easy, but the reality is that there are hundreds of potentials to work on. We can't work on all of them at once, so we have to decide, which one first?

• Is the plan, patent, or blueprint wanted by anyone?
• Is it realistically something that can be released in a reasonable time period
• Will the release benefit anyone
• Are we able to release this at a great price

These are questions we ask ourselves as we decide what to release first. This is an important step since we are just opening up online. Once a few plans, patents, and blueprint have been decided on, we move on to the next step.

Outline the Plan, Patent, or Blueprint

Forget the computer, the pencil and paper process is faster and more productive. This is the draft stage where an outline is drawn up.

• What will the item look like
• How will it function
• Are the materials readily available
• What tools are needed
• What materials are needed

Once the plan, patent, or blueprint is laid out on paper, we refine it. If there we find gaps in the design that we do not know, (unlikely) we do some research outside of personal knowledge. So, the design is laid out in draft form, now what?

Design and build the layout

Forget the paper and pencil, time to bring back the computer. We use Adobe Indesign® to layout how the plan, patent module, or blueprint will look. Where photos are required, we layout a story board so what photos are needed is know from the start. It would be very inconvenient to complete the building of the item to find out we missed a few photos 25 steps ago.

• Rough draft the design on the computer
• Storyboard the photos for plan designs
• Double check to try and ensure we don't miss anything

Once the plan, patent, or blueprint is laid out on the computer and double checked. we head to the shop!

Head to the shop and start building

Building the design is a multi staged process. It's much harder then just doing it, we need to photo shoot every aspect, cut, weld, or whatever the step is. Tons of photos let me tell you!

• Acquire list of materials and photo shoot
• Gather the tools and photo shoot
• Start building photo shooting every step of the way.
• Come to a certain step, change our minds, redesign the step, build it a little different, photo shoot over.

This is a flexible stage, the building. We come to a step in the plan, and may decide a different way would be better. Or we find that the material is not so easy to come by, and substitute something better that's readily available. Ok, back to the computer...

Edit the draft, layout, photos

The physical part is pretty much done, now the tedious editing and layout begins.

• Organize all the photos from the building stage
• Step by step, layout the plan, editing photos as we go.
• Get half way done, change our minds about the layout, make alterations, and move on.
• Complete the plan, patent, or blueprint layout.

Alright, seems like we are just about done right? Nope!

Finalize the plan, ready the graphics and websites

OK, the plan is complete except for final editing. Now, the photos, graphics, explanations, etc, have to be designed for the websites. (DIYinnovation.com as well as it's network sites)

• Edit and upload photos
• Design, edit, and upload graphics
• Add the new plan or information to the websites
• Design covers, banners, etc

Plans done, presentation is done, now what? Complete a final edit and start over with a new plan, patent, or blueprint!
